The Camperdown, Lake Purrumbete and Cobden Angling Clubs came together for the day, helping attendees learn to fish from the banks of the lake.

Lake Purrumbete Angling Club president Craig Mitchell said the day turned out well despite some drizzle in the morning.

“There were a lot of kids and parents, which was great,” he said.

“The weather was pretty ordinary early on, but the showers cleared up.

“We had 16 fish caught and weighted – there were some extra fish which weren’t brought up to the clubrooms.

“The biggest fish was 2.5 kilograms and was a tiger trout, and there were some heavy rainbow trout as well.

“We had about 80 last year but, with the weather being the way it was, it was pretty good.”

All attending kids were able to take home a prize for their efforts, with some claiming the win for heaviest fish competitions held on the day.

The angling clubs also hosted a barbecue and gave out soft drink, keeping the budding anglers fuelled up to fish.

Mr Mitchell said the clubs received positive feedback about the day, with a special visit proving to be a highlight.

“We had Ben Scullin from Geelong come up with his lure learning program and had casting lessons to teach kids and a few adults how to cast properly,” he said.

“He did lure painting and taught kids why the lures were painted with dark colours on the top and light colours on the bottom.

“The lures are imitating small fish – they’re coloured that way to avoid predators.

“Looking from above, the dark top blends in with the bottom and looking from the bottom it blends in with the sky.

“He proved a big hit with the kids and a few adults as well – a big shout out to him for coming down.”

Lake Purrumbete Angling Club also handed out second-hand fishing rods from their surplus to a number of attendees.
