Family in the front row
IT’S becoming a tradition for teenage musician James Eller to line up a gig in Terang for his grandparents to enjoy when he’s in the region.
Last Friday marked the third year the 14-year old James Eller has booked a gig at the Commercial Hotel prior to his weekend performances at the Port Fairy Jazz Festival.
Speaking with Western District Newspapers prior to performing for a full house, James said he always makes a point to perform in front of his proud grandparents, Harold and Jeanette Eller.
“It’s awesome to be back,” he said.
“It’s great to play in front of them, their friends and the wider community.
“It’s a great experience.
“I am so thankful to have so many people from the Terang community show up, it’s always good to have this kind of support.”
His performance on Friday night saw him playing the saxophone, trumpet and clarinet.
However, the multi-talented musician is also proficient playing the drums and recently began honing his skills on the trombone.
James said he has loved music as long as he could remember.
“This is my sixth year playing the saxophone but I’m always trying to pick up new instruments,” he said.
“I’ve just always loved music.”
His grandfather, Harold Eller, said it was always a proud moment to spend time with James, who lives on the Gold Coast, and see him perform.
James’ grandparents have long been his biggest fans, and always encouraged him to pursue his passion.
“We’ve encouraged him from the word go,” Mr Eller said.
“He got his first drum kit from us at the age of three, we got him a saxophone when he was about five and we’ve always encouraged him to pursue his passion for music.
“He’s a very talented musician, but he’s also a good cricketer and he’s a good student.
“We’re incredibly proud.”
James showcased his abilities at the Port Fairy Jazz Festival to a delighted crowd.
At the festival he entered the John Huf competition for jazz musicians under the age of 26, which he won.
He was presented with a certificate and a cheque for $1000.
