Farmers warned to check silage

FARMERS are being urged to keep an eye on their silage following an incident in Pirron Yallock on Monday.

A Country Fire Authority (CFA) spokesperson said the CFA units from Colac, Larpent, Cororooke and Nalangil responded to reports of a silage pit ballooning at around 2.20pm along Tomahawk Creek Road.

“Four CFA units are on scene alongside Fire Rescue Victoria and Victoria Police,” the spokesperson said.

“On arrival, crews found a 30-metre by 15-metre silage heap with tightly wrapped plastic beginning to balloon.

“Atmospheric monitoring is underway, and a scientific officer has been contacted.

“Winds caused potentially toxic vapours to drift in a north-west direction towards the Princes Highway.”

An advice warning was issued for residents and businesses within the area between Tomahawk Creek Road and the Princes Highway advising them to close windows and doors to prevent the vapours from entering.

The CFA spokesperson said farmers are encouraged to ring Triple Zero (000) if they notice anything unusual about their silage such as inflation without wind blowing or a rotten egg smell.

“Emergency services are investigating the source of the hazard and established an exclusion zone around the site,” the spokesperson said.
