The side won its opening game of the Deakin University Female Football League against Old Collegians 2.5 (17) to 0.6 (6) at Timboon Recreation Reserve.
Team manager Donna Ellis said the group was “very excited” and “very pleased” to win its opening game and make “a great start to the season”.
“There was a lot of hard work done in the off-season and there are a lot of new players and it showed they have gelled in the first game which is great,” she said.
“It gives them confidence as football players because we had quite a few new players and we’ve got a lot who come from netball.
“Getting a win first up I guess shows that if you put in the hard work, you’ll get the results.”
Ellis said the final score did not reflect the closeness of the encounter.
“The Demons had the upper hand for most of the day but having said that Old Collegians put up a good show,” she said.
“The ball was in their forward line for quite some time, particularly in the second quarter, but our back line held up and stopped them from scoring.
“The score doesn’t reflect how well Old Collegians played but I guess our defenders were just too strong.”
Ebony Woods kicked two goals to be named among the best players alongside Jaimie Castledine, Tahnee Bartlett, Olive Andrew, Tahlia Berry and Akisha Cuthell while Ellis the remaining members of the team also played well.
She said with the Warriors also having low numbers, the Demons exchanged players to help them field a side, which in turn saw the match played in great spirits.
“Everyone put in,” she said.
“And our girls that played for them, they gave it a red hot go too and they played well for them.”
The Demons’ attention now turns to a second round clash with Cobden at Timboon Recreation Reserve this Sunday.
Ellis said her side has had some tough battles against the Bombers in past games, with this weekend’s clash expected to be no different.
“Cobden have been tough opponents for us especially last year and in the practice matches we’ve played against them,” she said.
“I think it could go either way, we’re not overly confident but we’ll see how we go on the day.”
Cobden will be playing its first game of the season this Sunday having had the bye in round one.
They announced their new coach on Monday with Adam Jenkins set to take on the role starting this week.
