Talented cricketer Lahiru Fernando will return to the Bulls this upcoming season both as a player and senior coach.

Fernando, or ‘Larry’ as he is affectionately known at the club, was a member of Pomborneit’s division one three-peat of premierships from 2018/19 to 2020/21, taking 95 wickets in 44 matches.

Fernando has spent the past three seasons playing for Melbourne clubs East Burwood and Vermont, but a desire to get out of the city has seen the Sri Lankan export move back to the Pomborneit district to live and work in the dairy industry.

Reappointed Pomborneit skipper Matt Bignell was thrilled with the appointment.

“Fernando’s professionalism and experience in high level cricket will play a big role in taking our training to the next level and get it to where we think it needs to be,” Bignell said.

Pomborneit president Dave Murphy said the club was thrilled to have such a quality cricketer and a quality person as ‘Larry’ living locally and playing for the club again.

“Larry will complement skipper Matt Bignell and adds to the leadership at the club,” Murphy said.

According to Pomborneit junior coordinator Luke Reynolds, Fernando will also help out with coaching of the club’s junior boys teams.

“Larry was brilliant with any junior who wanted advice in his previous stint at the club and he will be a wonderful asset for our junior program,” Reynolds said.

“I know there’s many junior Bulls excited for his return and having him around and helping out.”
