Festival ready to bring plenty of colour

From kite flying to choir performances, festival co-organiser and Terang Progress Association president Benjamin Dennis said the program will cater to a range of interests.
“We do have something for all age groups which should be appealing,” he said.
Mr Dennis said the idea of a kite festival had been in the pipeline as a priority of the Terang Community Plan since about 2012.
“It’s definitely been an interest for the town for a long time,” he said.
With the allocation of funding through the Arts in the Avenues committee and a range of other groups and clubs, Mr Dennis said the festival had grown from just a kite festival to a cultural and creative smorgasbord.
With the festival set to coincide with the Grand Final public holiday, the organising committee hopes tourists travelling through the town will stop and enjoy the attractions.
Large-scale 3-D kites from Kites 4 Kids will launch into the sky at 10am at the cricket ground, with kite creating workshops to be held at the Terang Croquet Club, with a $7 entry fee.
Terang librarian Margaret McIntosh said students from the Hampden Specialist School’s junior campus will show off their kite creations they had been working on over three weeks.
“It’s been a really good activity for them,” she said.
The Corangamite Shire Council will host a ‘colour dash’ event from 1pm at the cricket ground as part of the festival.
Tickets are available via Eventbrite, with family tickets available for $15, while individuals can participate for $5 and children under 12 can run for free.
The Terang Civic Hall will be open throughout the day, with local art, sculpture, quilts and gems on display for a gold coin donation, as well as a performance from the Sing Out Loud choir at 11.30am.
Local photographers will also be exhibiting their work in the Terang Country Women’s Association (CWA) hall for a gold coin donation.
Children and adults with a passion for nature can experience a range of sights, sounds, smells on The Nature Bus near the CWA hall.
Attendees should struggle to remain hungry throughout the day, with a number of local cafes and eateries set to stay open and food trucks and stalls to be scattered along the avenue and the cricket ground.
Local musical talents will also be on display on two stages near the rotunda and at the rear of the Terang Civic Hall, including Fiona and Tara Anderson, the Lakes and Craters Band and Grace Moloney, with visitors encouraged to bring their own chairs.
An exhibition of Queensland photographer Rob Heyman’s work will also be open at the Commercial Hotel during the day.
The exhibition features a number of black-and-white photographs of local farming families.
People with a passion for art can visit Warrnambool-based artist Jimmi Buscombe near the drinking fountain while he creates a unique 3-D piece or visit the artists in action at the rear of the Terang Civic Hall.
Terang and district community members and visitors alike will also be able to contribute to a large-scale art project, in which participants will be welcomed to draw their own picture on a long piece of paper.
Other attractions will include vintage car displays, giant chess and Jenga sets, a jumping castle, face painting and fabric spinners.
Floral displays will also be on show across the town’s churches – St Thomas’ Church from 10am until 11am, Thompson Memorial Presbyterian Church from 11am until 12pm, Terang Uniting Church from 12noon until 1pm and All Saints Anglican Church from 1pm until 2.30pm.
Visitors are encouraged to visit the Terang Information Centre adjacent to the Terang Civic Hall to pick up a program and plan out the day.
Attendees are also encouraged to keep an eye out for ‘Oakey’, the festival’s mascot decked out in oak leaves and handing out bubble wands.
