Fifth place in reach
CAMPERDOWN’S senior netballers sit just a game outside the top five on the Hampden League ladder following last weekend’s win over the Bloods.
The Magpies travelled to Mortlake on Saturday to take on the seventh-placed Bloods in the Open division and after a relatively even first quarter, went out firing in the second to go into the half-time break with a handy eight goal lead.
A 13-9 third quarter saw the Magpies extend their lead to 12 goals before hanging on in the final term to win 55-46.
Sophie Conheady, Lily Eldridge and Chloe Davis all played pivotal roles to be named in the best.
Other results on the netball courts for the Magpies were:
Division one – Terang Mortlake defeated Camperdown 6-32. Best for the Magpies: Kirby Stonehouse, Chloe O’Brien and Grace Lucas.
Division two – Terang Mortlake defeated Camperdown 38-29. Best: Kaitlyn Fowler, Lauren Murphy and Georgia Lucas.
Division three – Camperdown defeated Terang Mortlake 46-40. Best: Hannah Plozza, Ruby Walsh and Rachael Giblett.
17 and under – Camperdown defeated Terang Mortlake 48-30. Best: Piper Stephens, Greta Neal and Isobel Sinnott.
15 and under – Terang Mortlake defeated Camperdown 36-19. Best: Shelby Mahony, Charlotte Hinds and Kara Bell.
15 and under reserves – Terang Mortlake defeated Camperdown 43-9. Best: Kayla Loving, Taylor Cameron and Evie Mahony.
13 and under – Camperdown defeated Terang Mortlake 39-12. Best: Madison Lucas, Olive Wills and Chloe Castle.
13 and under reserves – Camperdown defeated Terang Mortlake 18-8. Best: Bella Brebner, Ava Lafferty and Meg Nolan.
With eights rounds of the home and away season remaining, Camperdown’s senior footballers currently sit eighth on the ladder with three wins on the board – three games below the fifth placed Terang Mortlake.
Last weekend’s clash with the Bloods saw the side playing catch-up footy for most of the day after the home side took a commanding 30-point lead by the end of the first quarter.
The Magpies were restricted to just 3.5 by the major break but made a bigger impact on the scoreboard in the second half, kicking nine goals to the Bloods’ 11.
Finals scores were Terang Mortlake 17.9.111 to Camperdown 12.11.83.
Best for the Magpies were Eric Guthrie, Hamish Sinnott, Joshua Place, Charlie Lucas, Matthew Field and Luke O’Neil.
Goals went to Matthew Field, Angus Gordon, Hamish Sinnott and Myles Sinnott (two each), along with Guthrie, Charlie Lucas, Will Rowbottom and Zach Sinnott.
Camperdown’s reserves found the fifth-placed Bloods too strong on the weekend, going down by 63 points, 10.11.71 to 1.2.8.
Luke Ball kicked the side’s only goal while Logan Mahony, Brian Fanning, Bohdie Gill, James McVilly, Ashley Royal and Shane Morgan were named in the best.
The under 18s have retained fifth spot on the league ladder despite going down to the Bloods by two points, 4.3.27 to 4.5.29.
Goals went to Eddie Baker, Aidan Conheady, Daniel Ryan and Lennox Tregea-Copeland.
The Magpies will host Hamilton Kangaroos at Leura Oval for round 11 tomorrow (Saturday).
