THE Theatre Royal was transformed into a film studio last Friday and Saturday as the Camperdown Theatre Company hosted a group of film students from Victorian College of the Arts (VCA).
The group of budding filmmakers hadsearched across Victoria to find a heritage theatre to stage a play which features in theshort film ‘We the Children of Caterpillars’.
A number of the theatre company members became extras as ‘tragedians’ in the film’s stage play and experienced the thrill of lights, camera, action as the crew aimed for the perfect shot.
Camperdown Theatre Company secretary Toby McKenzie assisted the students with the venue and was impressed with the unique process.
“It was very interesting to see the similarities and differences between live theatre and filmmaking,” he said.
“The days involved a lot of fine tuning and adjustments for each take and combined both theatrical and film techniques to bring the play alive for screen.
“The students were very capable and enthusiastic and I look forward to seeing the result of their hard work.”
The footage will now enter post production at VCA, before premiering later this year in Melbourne.
A local screening is hoped for soon after its release.
