Final month of winter ends with low rainfall

TERANG and Mortlake experienced rainfall well below expected levels during August as predicted drier weather begins to arrive.

TERANG and Mortlake experienced rainfall well below expected levels during August as predicted drier weather begins to arrive.

During August Mortlake experienced a total of 28.4mm of rain.

The total falls well below the long-term monthly average of 65.3mm during what has traditionally been the wettest month of the year.

The highest daily rainfall occurred on August 18, when 10.6mm of rain hit the ground.

The monthly rainfall tally fell well below the 79mm result recorded in August 2022 with drier weather expected to be setting in for the remainder of the year.

To date Mortlake has experienced 398.4mm of rainfall through the first eight months of 2023, slightly above the long-term average of 383.9mm over the same period.
Meanwhile Terang also experienced low rainfall with 36.8mm hitting the ground, almost one third of the long-term August average of 91.9mm.

The highest daily rainfall occurred on August 19 with 14mm hitting the ground.

The figure marked a sharp decline on the previous year, with 108.8mm of rain falling during August 2022.

To date Terang has experienced 474.6mm of total rainfall throughout 2023, below the long-term average of 516.3mm over the same period.
