Final preparations underway for C’down show

THE Camperdown Pastoral and Agricultural Society (P and A Society) are making final preparations in the lead-up to the annual Cobden and Camperdown Community Bank Camperdown Show.

This year’s show will be held on Saturday, October 12 from 9am to 3pm, with horse events running all day as well as on Sunday, October 13.

Camperdown P and A Society trade stall organiser Jo Stephens said preparations for the show have been “going well” in recent weeks.

“We have some new members on our committee this year, that bring different skills and knowledge to our team which is great,” she said.

“This allows us to have judging of livestock such as horses, sheep, cattle, miniature goats, poultry.

“The maintenance crew are amazing at keeping the grounds in ideal condition.

“So thanks to all the work they have done to prepare for show day.”

Mrs Stephens said there will be lots of new and returning attractions at this year’s show.

“We’ve got the Victoria State Jersey Show, so the jerseys are back this year,” she said.

“We’ve got an eight-metre tall rock-climbing wall for anyone to climb, adults and children.

“We’ve got a scarecrow-making competition in our homecrafts section where you build a sustainable scarecrow with recyclable and repurposed materials, keeping in mind our theme is Blue Jeans and Country Dreams.

“That’s going to be judged by people, so it’s going to a people’s choice voting on that.

“We’ve got a butterfly enclosure, where you can go into an enclosure and butterflies can land on you - that’s something new.”

Other new attractions include a real dinosaur show, an appearance by world-famous blue heeler Bluey, and a motorcycle show and shine, which is being run in conjunction with the Camperdown Motorcycle Club.

Mrs Stephens said there will also be an opportunity to learn more about local emergency services this year.

“We’re looking forward to the local police being involved this year – they’re having a trade site, and they’re looking at providing the community with anti-theft screws for their number plates,” she said.

“You can either take them and do it yourself, or they’re hoping to have enough staff on show day to be able to replace your screws for you.

“That’s a community project that the local police want to do for the community, so anyone at the show can go and have a chat to them.

“That’s something we think is great for the community.

“We have all the local emergency services all there, sharing information on what they do and how they’re involved in the community.”

Mrs Stephens said, while fan favourites such as the dog jump and show bags will be returning, there will be a new spin on some other show favourites.

“We have many new trade sites this year, from farm machinery, many different food choices, sweets and ice creams to hand made goods and blacksmith creations,” she said.

“We’ve got the mystery show bag, which is a huge hit - this year the bag has a ticket included in them to go in the draw to win a child’s bike kindly donated by Benallacks Sports.

“Mystery show bags cost $10 and are generously donated by our major sponsor Cobden and Camperdown Community Bank.

“That’s like a mystery trail around the show to all different stops for kids to get little bits and pieces.”

Other show favourites making a return this year include Miniature Goats Australia and the Dachshund Dash.

“We’ve got the Make, Bake, Grow and Create again, and that’s just about anyone who’s got a skill in making, baking, creating or growing anything we’d love them to share with us on show day to see where all our hidden talents are in the community,” Mrs Stephens said.

“I’d really encourage some people, given it’s school holidays, to have a look at potentially getting your kids together and making a scarecrow and bringing it up on show day.

“They’ll be displayed around the grounds on the day to see how creative people are in using recyclables to create scarecrows.

“We’ve got a blacksmith coming, and he’ll be doing some demonstrations, and we’ve got wood chopping again.

“The Pet Parade is another one – kids love bringing their favourite pet and showing it off to the community.”

A variety of food stalls are set to keep stomachs full throughout the day, with live music form local bands also on the agenda for this year.

Mrs Stephens said memberships were available for $25, which provides prepaid access to the show for two adults and two children – entry is also available at the gates for $30 on the day.

Entry on the day is $15 per adult, $5 per child aged between 5-17, and free for children under the age of five.

“It’s a great, affordable day for family to come out and enjoy the day’s entertainment,” Mrs Stephens said.

“We hope that the community, of all ages, can come to the show day and learn something, enjoy watching livestock and skilled participants perform at their best, catch up with friends, and have a great day at an affordable price.”

Mrs Stephens said outdoor trade stalls are still available for hire at $25, with forms available by emailing camperdownshowtradesite@gmail.com.

Show schedules are available at Courthouse Camperdown, Cobden Visitor Information Centre and local businesses throughout Cobden and Camperdown.
