Finals await netballers
COBDEN’S senior footballers have ended their season with a 51 point loss to Portland on Saturday.

The visitors ran out 17.10.112 to 9.7.61 winners in the round 18 clash at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve.
“Despite the score we still played some good footy,” Cobden coach Brody Mahoney said.
“We just got a bit outclassed in the midfield with their bit bigger bodies.”
The first and final quarters were relatively even, with Portland kicking nine goals to three in the middle two quarters.
“They definitely controlled the middle patch of the game.
“We were happy with how we played half of the game, part of being a young team is developing towards playing four quarters.”
Gus Walsh was the Bombers best in the loss.
“Gus started down back then went into the ruck in the second half, he had a strong influence around the ball and in the air.”
Jordan Fowler and Sam Lucas were also in Cobden’s best.
“Jordan hit the scoreboard with two goals and went hard against Portland’s midfielders.
“Sam has been super consistent, we threw him forward and he really showed he can play at either end.”
Mahoney also had praise for first year players Campbell and Parker Walsh.
“The twins have been super consistent, they really haven’t had a bad game since making their senior debuts, they’re just so clean and fast by hand and foot.”
For the Bombers, Michael Koroneos kicked three goals, with two each to Fowler and Matty Drayton.
Cobden finished in ninth place on the senior ladder with five wins and 13 losses.
While the players will now take a break, Mahoney is set for a hectic time.
“It’s a busy, silly time ahead, we’ll look to recruit and most importantly retain most of our list which we are already well on the way to doing.”
Portland got the points in the reserves football with a four point win, 4.7.31 to 4.3.27.
Josh McGlade, Thomas Roberts and Angus Molan were Cobden’s best, with Thomas Spokes kicking two goals and McGlade and Roberts one each.
The Bombers reserves finish the season in seventh position with seven wins and 11 losses.
The under 18 game saw Portland have a strong 7.16.58 to 2.5.17 win.
Hamish Dean, Hayden Chamberlain and Brodey Muller-de Vent were Cobden’s best, with Oscar Norman and Michael Katsaros kicking a goal each.
The under 18 Bombers finish the 2025 season in ninth place with four wins and 14 losses.
In the Open netball, Cobden scored a 55-49 win.
“The game was close throughout, Portland has improved and really built throughout the season,” Cobden coach Nadine McNamara said.
“It was quite a physical and close contest, which will hopefully hold us in good stead for our first final.”
Alicia Blain was best for the Bombers in the win.
“With a shift to one on one defence, I thought Alicia did a great job of shutting down their second phase options.”
Sarah Mooney and Jaymie Finch were also named in Cobden’s best.
“Sarah played across goal keeper and goal defence, she was fantastic at confusing the space to cause turnovers and gaining ball from rebounds.
“Jaymie was consistent throughout the game, her ball usage was clean and she was composed through challenging, physical moments.”
Finch top scored for Cobden with 26 goals, while Molly Hutt scored 21.
Cobden finished the home and away season in fourth place and will take on Camperdown in Sunday’s elimination final.
McNamara is looking forward to the challenge.
“They had a great result drawing with Koroit last round, so we know they will be taking momentum and confidence into the final.
“They’re a side who release a lot of high and long balls to their goal shooter, so we will be looking to put more defensive pressure on them this time around to hopefully generate some turnovers.”
In the division one netball, Cobden recorded a 45-28 win.
Macey Hicks, Kate Smith and Grace Taylor were Cobden’s best, with Hannah Anderson shooting 15 goals, Nikki Clover 12 and Jess Bouchier 11.
Cobden finished on top of the division one netball ladder with 14 wins, three losses and a draw and will have the first week of the finals off as a reward.
Portland got the points in division two with a 39-34 win.
