COBDEN’S Open netball side will progress to this Saturday’s semi-final after an impressive 18-goal win over Koroit last weekend, 47-29.
The Bombers came out firing on Saturday, shooting eight quick goals in the opening minutes of the game before Koroit had an opportunity to get on the scoreboard.
Team coach Sophie Hinkley said she was thrilled with her team’s performance – and that of the club’s – on Saturday.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve come away with such good victories against Koroit; it was impressive for us an entire club in terms of our confidence moving deeper into finals,” she said.
“To get five (wins) from five on Saturday was amazing.”
Reflecting on her team’s performance, Hinkley said they had an impressive first quarter, putting strong defensive pressure on Koroit which set the scene for the day.
“The girls all worked really hard from start to finish, which I was really happy with.” she said.
“We now look to this coming weekend against South Warrnambool. A strong defence wins games so if we can continue to apply that constant pressure and get some turnovers that will be key.”
Hinkley believes South’s attacking end is “very strong, clever and patient”.
“It (Saturday) will be about us also having patience, maintaining defensive pressure for as long as possible and hopefully that causes errors and we can then apply pressure on the scoreboard at the other end.”
Best for the Bombers on Saturday were Remeny McCann, Emily Finch and Sophie Hinkley.
Cobden’s division one side, after finishing top of the ladder, had last weekend off and will now face Koroit in this Saturday’s semi-final.
Likewise, the Bombers’ 17 and under reserves also finished as ladder leaders and will face South Warrnambool this Saturday.
In the 17 and under competition, Cobden defeated Hamilton in last Sunday’s elimination final 32-31 and will face Warrnambool in this Sunday’s semi-final.
Best for the Bombers last weekend were Paige Compton, Matilda Darcy and Jessica Walsh.
