First loss sees Bloods drop to third
TERANG Mortlake’s senior football team had its first loss of the season in the clash of the unbeaten Hampden League teams on Saturday.
Reigning premiers North Warrnambool led all day at the DC Farran Oval to record a 10.7.67 to 6.7.43 win.
“We came out of the blocks a bit slow, but to North’s credit they put it to us early and kicked off their score in the first quarter,” Terang Mortlake coach Lewy Taylor said.
“They probably played the better game on the day, but I still thought in the third quarter we had our chances, we just couldn’t quite take them, that might have made a bit more of a game of it, but yeah they’re a good side.”
Alex Moloney was best for the Bloods for his role on former AFL footballer Josh Walker.
“I thought he did a good job on Walker and did some good things throughout the day.
“He ended up getting swung forward and kicked a goal, he was good, he’s always good really.”
Xavier Vickers gathered 25 disposals but his 17 tackles were a standout in the game.
“Xavier played a good game, his tackling continues to be outstanding, we won the tackling quite easy which was pleasing.
“That was probably one good thing to take out of it, which probably puts us pretty close to number one now in the league, it was a good day in terms of the tackling side of it, we had 32 in the second quarter, so we responded pretty well after that first quarter which was pleasing.”
Charlie Kenna played his first game in Terang Mortlake colours this season after representing the Greater Western Victoria Rebels under 18 team in six games so far in 2026.
“It was good to have Charlie back, he was looking pretty dangerous and kicked a couple of goals, so hopefully getting him for the next two weeks is the plan.”
This week the third placed Bloods travel to the Reid Oval to take on the fifth placed Warrnambool.
“They’re in good form, it’s going to be a tough game going there, but we’re looking forward to it.
“Obviously it’s a pretty big game for us in terms of just trying to keep ahead and keep stacking the wins, so we’ll be looking to bounce back.”
In the reserves, North Warrnambool was too strong, winning 6.15.51 to 4.2.26.
Best for the Bloods were Matthew Baxter, Samual McLean and Liam O’Connor, with Baxter kicking three goals.
The under 18 football saw North Warrnambool score a 6.17.53 to 3.6.24 win.
Lachlan Primmer, Zavier Fowler, Jobe Baker and Max Slater were best for Terang Mortlake.
North Warrnambool scored a big 22.14.16 to 5.2.32 win in the under 16 game.
Arlo Herry, Paddy Meade and Hugh Kenna were best for the Bloods, with Tyler Ackerley kicking two goals.
In the under 14s, North Warrnambool won 7.8.50 to 3.2.20.
Keian Guerrero, Oliver Clarke and Liam Kenna were best for Terang Mortlake, with Braxton Sachs, Ollie Clarke and Zac Clarke kicking a goal each.
The under 12 football saw a 5.5.35 to 4.1.25 win for North Warrnambool.
Seamus Meade, Alexander Gubbins and Harry Heffernan were best for the Bloods, with Gubbins, Connor Jewell, Jack Gilmour and Felix Harrison kicking a goal each.

In the Open netball, Terang Mortlake led at every change to record a 45-42 win.
McKenzie Dillon, Jacqui Arundell and Pippa Barr were best for the Bloods in the win, with Lyla Grundy shooting 35 goals.
The division one game saw North Warrnambool win 50-34.
Best for Terang Mortlake were Bailee Overweter, Claudia Lee and Ellen-Rose Lee, with Holly Fowler shooting 18 goals and Maddison Chesshire 14.
The division two game ended with a 36-18 win to North Warrnambool.
Holly Jones, Caitlin Overweter and Lizzie Justin were best for the Bloods, with Ava Nolan scoring 14 goals.
North Warrnambool took out the division three netball with a 33-28 win.
Best for Terang Mortlake were Isla Primrose, Sophie Conheady and Ava Osborne, with Primrose scoring 20 goals.
The 17 and under game saw Terang Mortlake win 49-27.
Madelyn Clarke, Pippa Barr and Tayla Bell were best in the win, with Lyla Grundy shooting 31 goals and Clarke 18.
Terang Mortlake also got the points in the 17 and under reserves with a 29-14 win.
Sommer Jones, Kara Bell and Emma Hill were best for the Bloods, with Tahnee Sachs shooting 16 goals and Violet Dillon 13.
North Warrnambool was too strong in the 15 and under game, winning 42-10.
Best in the loss for Terang Mortlake were Mia Baker, Tilly Harrison and Zoe Hill, with Sadie Baker scoring five goals.
The 15 and under reserves game saw Terang Mortlake win 28-20.
Poppy Moloney, Isabella Robertson and Grace Boshier were best for Terang Mortlake, with Moloney scoring 18 goals and Robertson 10.
The 13 and under game saw North Warrnambool register a 24-16 win.
Matilda Conheady, Daisy Dillon and Elise Jewell were best for the Bloods, with Imogen Barr shooting 11 goals.
The 13 and under reserves netball also went the way of North Warrnambool who scored a 22-11 win.
Layla Thornton, Zarli Dower and Mary Heffernan were Terang Mortlake's best, with Daisy Sargeant shooting six goals.
