This is my five hundred and thirty first report for Western District News and unfortunately my final one.

It’s hard to believe that I have been submitting reports for the paper for over a decade now.

It was back in late July 2011 that my first report went into print.

Time does certainly fly.

Western District News is looking to revamp the paper in the near future, to keep the content fresh and appealing to readers.

Now for the final report:

Lake Purrumbete is fishing reasonably well with fish such as a five pound tiger trout and browns to eight boated recently.

Trolling and casting lures around the edges has paid off for some.

Reddies are still available at depth jigging as well as trolling close to the bankside weed beds.

Bullen Merri has plenty of chinook salmon to 2.4 kilograms along with the odd brown to 3.2 and Tiger trout to over 2 kilos.

Trolling lures in six to eight metres depth has seen some good fish caught.

Elingamite is full and trout to just on a kilo, they are being taken trolling close to the weed beds along with some redfin to 900 grams.

Medium divers is all that’s needed here to pull in a fish.

The saltwater scene has been quiet due to the weather but those braving the elements are catching good pinkie snapper to 40 centimetres along with squid and rock cod off the Warrnambool breakwater.

King george whiting are also beginning to show themselves and Newfields Bay near Peterborough has been good on dusk with fish to 40 centimetres taking squid tentacles.

The estuaries are hard work at the moment due to the constant influx of dirty water however a few bream to 36 centimetres have been taken below the bridge and near the danger board on the beginning of the runout.

Bait has accounted for most fish.

I’d like to thank all readers of my column for your support over the years and to all who made contact with me regarding our passion for fishing.

With a special thanks to the following- Shane Stevens, Micheal Evans of Victorian Inland Charters, Marty Ellul, Neil Slater and Geoff Wilson just to name a few and apologies to those not named.

Thanks heaps guys.

Signing off for the final time. Stay safe on the water and live life to the fullest.

- Rod Shepherd
