V/LINE fell short of its performance targets during October as high rainfall caused widespread flooding events across Victoria.

Performance remained strong on the Warrnambool line as trains recorded 90.9 per cent for reliability and 86.9 per cent for punctuality in October.

While the results fell short of the 96 per cent reliability target and 92 per cent punctuality target, a V/Line spokesperson said the flood event which affected large parts of Victoria was the leading cause of trains being unable to run for all or part of the journey during October, leading to eight cancellations.

“Some services were also disrupted by train faults,” the V/Line spokesperson said.

“Delays were caused by a range of factors including a number of unrelated train faults throughout the month.”

Coaches replaced Warrnambool trains for part of the journey from October 1-9 while works took place on the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds duplication project and the Warrnambool line upgrade.

Coaches are again replacing trains this month on the Warrnambool Line between Geelong and Warrnambool until Saturday, December 3 to allow commissioning of stage 1 of the Warrnambool Line upgrade.

This will enable V/Line to introduce a new Warrnambool line timetable from Sunday, December 4 which includes an additional return weekday service.

“Warrnambool line passengers can look forward to a fifth daily train to and from Melbourne once upgrade works are completed in early December,” a V/Line spokesperson said.

“We thank passengers for their patience while we dealt with the impact of significant flooding across the V/Line network in October.”
