A FOOTBRIDGE in Lismore will soon see works beginning after Corangamite Shire Council approved a decision to allocate funds towards planning a replacement.

Council recently agreed to allocate $6648.20 towards an engineering survey, alignment and structural design for a replacement bridge at the Browns Water Holes site.

The allocation is from the Community Planning Reserve, which was established in 2014 to set aside funds for implementation of small projects within the shire.

The Browns Water Holes bridge is part of the Lismore Discovery Trail, which includes extensive walking trails around the township and a trail heading to the Lismore Cemetery.

An application was put before council following an inspection last year, with the steel footbridge considered unsafe and closed and condemned as a result.

The bridge runs under the Hamilton Highway, providing a space where pedestrians can cross the town without needing to cross the highway.

Councillor Nick Cole alluded to this at the council meeting, saying it was a major part of keeping Lismore safe.

“It’s a footbridge that keeps everyone off the highway,” she said.

“It’s knackered, basically; it’s not safe anymore. It needs renewing

“I think it’s an important part of safety and concern for Lismore.”

Councillor Laurie Hickey shared Cr Cole’s sentiment.

“We owe a responsibility to all our members of our shire to have a safe place to work and play, and this trail’s very well-regarded,” Cr Hickey said.

“Once it’s been replaced, everyone will have an opportunity to go through that way and enjoy the scenery.”

More than $600,000 has been allocated through the Community Planning Reserve this year.
