Fourth win for Cobden seniors
COBDEN scored a fourth senior football win of the season on Saturday in its round 12 clash against Hamilton.
The Bombers held off a fast finishing Hamilton to record an 11.11.77 to 11.6.72 win at Melville Oval.
Cobden held a 38-point lead at three quarter time, but the home side kicked six goals to none in the final term.
“The game, in the end, got a lot closer than I would have liked,” Cobden coach Brody Mahoney said.
“It was a really disappointing way to finish, especially after playing so well for the first three quarters.”
Small forward Matty Drayton kicked four goals and was the Bombers best.
“Matty was super for us and really dangerous around goal,” Mahoney said.
“He had plenty of shots and probably could have kicked a few more, but he was a real spark for us.”
Mahoney was full of praise for ruck combination Alf Armstrong and Gus Walsh for their role on Hamilton powerhouse ruckman Levi Dare.
“Between them, Alf and Gus did a super job in nullifying Levi's effectiveness, they teamed up well on him.”
Grady Rooke was also a key player for Cobden on the day.
“As an assistant coach, Grady probably doesn’t get the recognition he deserves,” Mahoney said.
“He played a great game at half back, was cool headed and read the ball very well.”
This week Cobden will host Port Fairy at the Cobden Community Bank Recreation Reserve.
“The boys are pumped, and excited to continue the second half of the season well.”
In the reserves football, Cobden had a 5.7.37 to 2.6.18 win.

In the Open netball, Cobden scored another strong win, 69-28.
“We played a great defensive game,” Cobden coach Nadine McNamara said.
“Our defenders were incredible with their pressure.”
Jess McGlade played her 100th Open netball game for Cobden and was named best on court.
“We joked before the game about how players in their milestone games get put in the best players,” McNamara laughed.
“But Jess played a superb defensive game and would have had 15 intercepts.”
Since crossing from Colac and District Football Netball League club Birregurra in 2016, McGlade has played in both Cobden’s Open and division one teams.
“Jess has had four babies in her time at the club plus has gone through the Covid interrupted years.
“She’s such a hard worker and a sensational player.”
Lara Taylor and Sophie Blain were also in the Bombers best.
“Lara was fantastic in the centre, she plays with such maturity and clarity.
“Sophie was dynamic in a mix of wing defence and wing attack roles.”
Goal attack Jaymie Finch scored 32 goals for Cobden, with returning goal shooter Nikki Clover shooting 31.
McNamara is expecting another tough contest this week against Port Fairy.
“It was close last time (Cobden won 45-40), we know we will have to play well again against them.”
In the division one netball, Cobden came from behind at three quarter time to record a 36-33 win.
