AFTER years of planning and work behind the scenes, Cobden has a free camp spot.

Land at the rear of the Cobden Golf Club has been transformed on Bond Street to offer free camping for self-contained vehicles.

Progressing Cobden and the Cobden Golf Club joined forces to form a working group which have celebrated the recent opening of the spot.

Cobden Golf Club representative and working group member Trevor Gardner said he was pleased to see the free camp space open.

“We’re open now, we’ve just got to get the word out that we’re open,” he said.

“We’ve had a couple of people stay here that have just stumbled on it.

“We’re going through the process of getting it on the free camp sites.”

Mr Gardner said the project had been a “long time coming”.

“For years and years we looked into how we could have a facility for people to pull up and stay,” he said.

“A town like this needs something.

“We’ve put in a track across to the golf club to use the facilities and it’s also access to the town.”

Mr Gardner said the project had received a lot of support, with Beach Energy providing funds for its completion.

“Beach Energy have been our biggest supporters,” he said.

“RL Blake have also helped out.”

Mr Gardner said the Cobden Golf Club had provided the land, with Progressing Cobden managing the space.

Progressing Cobden representative and Cobden Visitor Information Centre volunteer Wendey Matheson also welcomed the opening.

“I’m just glad to see a free camp up and running in Cobden,” she said.

“It’s word of mouth to help promote free camps.”

Mrs Matheson said a number of visitors had already made use of the site to date with enquiries coming into the visitor centre.

The free camp is also about 200 metres from the dump point installed at the rear of the Cobden Roadhouse, making it a convenient location for travellers.
