The mobile site returned to Terang on Saturday, booking out all spots for those wanting a consultation with dermatological experts who could assess any potential concerns.

The Terang and District Lions Club bears all the costs for visits, giving anyone wanting a check up the opportunity to do so without cost.

Terang and District Lions Club member John Keane said he was thrilled to see the program had remained popular.

“We booked out of spots straight away, so this is the second time we’ve had the skin check van in Terang and they’ll come back to us again in two years,” he said.

“We’ve booked it for a further two years in advance because it’s always choc-a-bloc with people.”

Mr Keane said it was a rewarding experience to help people access vital health care as he knew all too well how cost prohibitive a skin check can be.

“It’s a rewarding feeling to see so many people,” he said.

“I missed out last year and had to go and have my skin tested in Warrnambool, which was fairly costly.

“This is all free when we do it, which makes it very attractive to people.”

Mr Keane said skin checks saved lives, and each year it was common for people to be referred for further care.

“Every year we picked up something which people get referred to see a specialist for,” he said.

“We’ve had melanomas picked up straight away and that’s very valuable.

“People get to have a free test, get any points of concern picked up by an expert straight away, and they are directed to the right place to have any potential melanoma tended to.”
