Friday night action
THE bright lights of Reid Oval will be shining tomorrow night (Friday) for the opening round of the 2024 Hampden Football Netball League season.
The Warrnambool Blues and Koroit Saints will battle it out under lights in the senior football and netball competitions, while the remaining grades will be played Saturday.
This will be the second time the newly developed facility will host a Friday night fixture – with the last being held in 2022.
Hampden League president Shane Threlfall said tomorrow night’s games will be a terrific way to officially open the 2024 season.
“It will be the first game of the opening round and it’s a great chance for people to come and have a look at some of the big star recruits coming into our league, particularly Ben Cunnington,” Threlfall said.
“It’s a great initiative from both Warrnambool and Koroit to move that game from the traditional Saturday to the Friday night.”
Locals were given their first glimpse into the new season late last week when South Warrnambool took on Koroit for their round four clash in what has become a Good Friday tradition.
Playing in front of a big crowd at Friendlies Society Park, the Roosters held firm to take the win by just 13 points, 11.9.75 to 9.8.62.
The two clubs will now have a bye round four.
In other Hampden League round one action this Saturday, South Warrnambool will host North Warrnambool, Camperdown will host Terang Mortlake, Port Fairy will travel to take on Portland and Cobden will be home to Hamilton.
