A variety of remote-controlled model airplanes will be on show on Saturday, February 21 and Sunday, February 22 from all across the state and beyond.

Camperdown Model Aircrafts Club president Foster Taylor said the fun fly was also an opportunity for the public to come along and see the club in action, serving as a primary way to encourage new members to sign up.

“We’re about the same as we were last year – our membership is at the 15-member mark,” he said.

“We had to cancel last year’s Fun Fly because of a Total Fire Ban, we ran a Come and Try day in April where we picked up another member from the town.

“With our Fun Fly this year, we’re keeping our fingers crossed and hoping we don’t get another Total Fire Ban.

“We’ll have people coming from South Australia, Mt Gambier, Naracoorte, Warrnambool, Hamilton, Ballarat, Melbourne and the Bellarine Peninsula.

“In a normal year, we’d get about 30 pilots who come along.”

Model types will vary from the smaller models favoured by club members locally to larger 2.5-metre wingspan models with petrol engines often brought along by metropolitan clubs.

Attending pilots are also invited to join a dinner on the Saturday night, where many flyers take the opportunity to share their accomplishments for the year and catch up with other enthusiasts who they don’t often see.

Club member Ray McCraw said many visitors enjoy the facility the club has at the racecourse.

“Visitors from other clubs love coming out here because it’s a wide-open field where it’s easy to see and there are no distractions in the background,” he said.

“Because many come from so far away, they love catching up with each other and showing off their planes.

“People often do a bit of swapping information and trading as well – we get a huge variety of people and planes coming in.

“It’s a good day for the public.”

Mr Foster encouraged anyone who is interested in model aircraft to come along on the day and speak with club members.

“We’ll show them what’s available, what the latest technology is and we teach people to fly at no cost,” he said.

“We’re here regularly, coming down every Sunday but a few of us also have a fly on the Wednesday when the conditions are right.

“We’ve had adverse conditions lately with gusty winds.

“If anyone wants to come along, they’ll see a full range of models they wouldn’t normally see during a normal flying year.”

Entry is $10 per person, with onsite catering and raffle also available over the weekend.
