CAMPERDOWN and District Historical Society is doing its bit to preserve a piece of local history for future generations.

Society member Maree Belyea said the Victorian State Government had given the group a grant for $5024 to help it digitise archives of the Hampden Guardian and Western Press newspapers to Trove, an online library database.

She said not all years were available, but what was would be digitised.

Mrs Belyea said the society was pleased with the successful grant application.

“It was a nice surprise,” she said.

“I think there were about 40 successful applications.”

Mrs Belyea said the newspapers were the oldest newspapers between Geelong and Warrnambool in Victoria.

“It’s the whole region that will benefit from the project not just us,” she said.

“It’s a free service with Trove.”

Mrs Belyea said the society was looking forward to the project progressing.
