Game 200 for Norton
CORANGAMITE Lions stalwart Jamie Norton became the first player to reach 200 games for the club on Sunday.
The Lions president reached the milestone in the division two match on Sunday, but was quick to play down his achievement.
“It’s a huge honour, but hopefully it can be broken with some of the juniors coming through.
“You start setting up the platform for the club and that’s there to be broken, I don’t want be the one with the most games or anything like that, hopefully some of these juniors coming through can get well and truly past that.”
From the club’s humble beginnings, Norton is thrilled with where the Lions have progressed to.
“At the start it was really grassroots, just a bunch of mates in one side, pretty well where it started.
“Now it really is a club.”
The club’s development means more to the president than reaching his milestone.
“When you are pushing so hard to grow and try to get stuff done and you see those little things, not the milestones of 200 games, it’s the milestones like the under 12s getting a win against a quality opponent last week and getting a draw this week.
“Or the women’s growth as well; when they started they were getting belted for two years, and now you look at the position they’re in, they’re the things I really enjoy and celebrate.”
Norton first got interested in the game playing as a teenager at Hawkesdale College and followed his father and step-father who both played the round ball code.
“I predominantly played footy (Australian Rules) through juniors until I was 18 or 19, and then jumped into playing both sports on a weekend.
“And when my shoulders weren’t really holding up for footy anymore, I jumped in over here to help out and try to get this club started, and it’s all pretty well snowballed from there.”
The milestone match saw Norton’s division two team lose 3-1, but it could have been a different result.
“I missed four goals myself,” Norton laughed.
