Garden wonders open for all

THE natural wonders of a number of Terang’s gardens will be on show this weekend as part of a Terang College fundraiser.
The gates will be open to the public at four gardens across Terang on Sunday as part of the Terang College Open Garden Day event.
Terang College’s own kitchen garden will be accessible, which includes an apple orchard and a new Picasso Cow installation.
Devonshire tea will also be available for attendees, with music students also performing throughout the morning.
The Terang Manse (‘Blauvelt Park’) will be a major attraction with food and gardenware stalls, entertainment, tea and coffee and raffles among the features throughout the day.
Gary and Helen Cole’s property at 177 Terang-Mortlake Road will also be on display, showcasing years of hard work.
“We purchased the property in September 1997, consisting of almost 23 acres,” Mrs Cole said.
“The house was built in 1901 and once had a beautiful garden extended to the front fence line.
“There was no real plan for the garden; we started planting the garden one area at a time. We thought it was too daunting to bulldoze and start from scratch, as there was the house to renovate and fences, sheds and cattle yards to build.”
The final open garden will be at ‘Bonnington’, with the owners Tim Brennan and Andrew McLean set to showcase the history of the property stretching back to the start of the 20th century and the new garden started when they arrived in 2016.
The open gardens will be:
‘Blauvelt Park’ (Terang Manse) – 1 McWilliam Street – 10am until 4pm;
Terang College kitchen garden – 45 Strong Street – 10am to 12noon;
177 Terang-Mortlake Road – 10am to 2pm; and
‘Bonnington’ – 5510 Princes Highway – 10am to 2pm.
Entry is available for $5 per garden or $15 for all four gardens.
All proceeds will contribute to an upgrade of the Terang College senior campus hall.
