Gators too strong for Cats

MORTLAKE had a 60 run loss in the round eight Warrnambool Moyne District Cricket Association match against Allansford-Panmure at the DC Farran Oval on Saturday.

Batting first in the one-day game after winning the toss, Allansford-Panmure made 7/193 from their 45 overs, with captain Shashan Silva top scoring with 45.

Todd Lamont bowled economically for Mortlake, taking 2/20 from nine overs, with Charlie Mahncke also taking two wickets.

Kalhan Sineth, Clinton Baker and Craig Britten took a wicket each.

Apart from 59 for the third wicket between Saman Gonawala and Charlie Mahncke, Mortlake struggled to put together meaningful partnerships and were all out in the 41st over for 133.

Gonawala top scored with 43 from 59 balls, hitting five boundaries.

Mahncke made 23 from 48, with Will Kain next best with 14.

The loss sees Mortlake go into the break in ninth position, with the next premier division match on January 10.

Mortlake’s Twenty20 campaign starts tonight, playing Noorat Terang at the DC Farran Oval, then games on Saturday against Spring Creek at the DC Farran and the Northern Raiders at Henderson Oval.

In the championship division, Mortlake had a four wicket loss to Dennington at the Mortlake College oval.

Batting first, Mortlake made 9/225 from its 45 overs.

Lachlan Higginson smashed 84 from 72 balls, hitting 12 fours and three sixes, with Todd Robertson making a run a ball 60, hitting five fours and three sixes.

In a tight finish, Dennington passed the score six wickets down with only one ball to spare.

Teenage off-spinner Sonny Podger was the best of the Mortlake bowlers, taking 2/26 from nine overs.

Mortlake’s championship team will play its next game on January 10.

In division three, Mortlake had a 67 run win at the Mack Oval over Russells Creek.

Batting first, Mortlake made 4/210, led by 74 from 87 balls to Corey Rounds.

Ryan Tanner made 52 from 51, with Jake Tanner scoring 24.

Jobe Baker ripped through the Mortlake top order, ending on 4/15 from eight overs as Russells Creek was dismissed for 143.

The division three Cats go into the break in sixth position and resume on January 17.

On Sunday the Mortlake/Cobden under 17s played two Twenty20 games, losing to North Warrnambool by 30 runs at Mortlake and defeating Allansford-Panmure by six wickets at Allansford.

North Warrnambool made 7/146 batting first, with Mortlake/Cobden replying with 8/116.

Captain Sonny Podger top scored with 30 retired from 35 balls.

In the second game Mortlake/Cobden made 4/131, led by 32 retired to Arlo Herry and 30 retired to Paddy Hassett.

Allansford-Panmure could only make 8/100, with Hassett and Sam Wareham taking three wickets each.

In the under 15 boys, Allansford-Panmure made 170 on the first day of their match at Allansford.

Rhys Darcy led the Mortlake/Cobden bowling with 3/16 from four overs.

Mortlake/Cobden will have their innings on day two this Friday.
