“I know what it’s like”: Mortlake College student Geordie Rollings-Wurak shaved his signature hairstyle in the name of a good cause last week. After battling a health scare of his own, the 15-year-old said he was inspired to make a difference, and has raised more than $1200 for the Good Friday Appeal in the process.

The Mortlake College student, and talented local athlete, has long cast an easily identifiable silhouette with his long, wavy locks.

After battling a health scare which left him hospitalised, Geordie wanted to make a positive difference for kids enduring such hardship by raising funds for this year’s Good Friday Appeal.

“Not that long ago I got COVID-19; I was diagnosed with long-COVID and got some heart issues from that,” he said.

“Because I had been to the Royal Children’s Hospital, I really wanted to help out and support because I know what it’s like to go there and what the kids feel.”

Geordie’s fundraiser quickly surpassed its goal of $1000, which left the 15-year-old beaming to have received such support from the wider community.

“I was not expecting to raise that much money, and I’m amazed with the support I got from this,” he said.

“A huge thank you to everyone for their generosity; I really wasn’t expecting that much money.

“I’m just speechless with that much money.”

Speaking with Western District Newspapers last Thursday, a few hours before getting his hair cut, Georgie admit the nerves had been creeping in but said he would not have it any other way.

“I’m a little nervous but its for a good cause, so I’m happy to do it if it’s for something like this,” he said.

Georgie is planning to keep the fundraiser open for a few more weeks.
