Gibson Steps reopened
AFTER months of closure due to public safety concerns, the Gibson Steps beach has officially reopened.
The Gibson Steps were closed in June 2025 due to rock falls from above the stairs, which can be common along the limestone cliffs during heavy rainfall and/or drying off periods.
Geotechnical assessments were undertaken to determine the extent of movement in the rock face, which confirmed after the removal of loose debris, the stairs could be reopened.
The work to reopen the steps was completed on Monday, February 9 and the stairs were officially reopened on Tuesday, February 10.
“Our teams have wrapped up specialist checks and geo-technical work to make sure this iconic spot is good to go,” a Great Ocean Road Coast and Parks Authority spokesperson said.
“Thanks to everyone for bearing with us and for taking care while we got things sorted.
“It is back open and another fantastic place to visit when exploring the region.”
