Thirty people from across the district and other churches descended on the St Paul’s Anglican Church for two hours of laughter and good company to raise funds for the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Reverend Matthew Jones said the Funny Friday raised $600 for the charity, which he called “fantastic”.

“We had two goals and we achieved both of them - one was we got together and had some laughter, because people are finding it very stressful with all the heavy news we get every day,” he said.

“The other one was that we were able to support a very good cause - in this case, the Starlight Foundation, which turns laughter into a smile for sick children.

“There was so much laughter and ridiculous jokes, a fabulous afternoon tea, and everyone just had such a good time.

“We had some really silly prizes to give to people, and everyone was in such a good mood.

“There were people from all different parts of the community, and one person said to me ‘thank you Matthew; we all need more laughter’.”

Jokes told at the event ranged from simple one-liners to funny stories, with all jokes being family-friendly in both subject and delivery.

“Not only were the jokes funny, but the way they were delivered by different people was very funny,” Rev Jones said.

“Some people had a very dry, deadpan face when they were telling a joke, which made it even funnier when they got to the punchline.

“There were some there that were so cringeworthy, there were people there that gave a big groan.

“We ended up with some more prizes being donated, so we ended up giving away seven prizes rather than the three – we had one for the groan, seven for laughter, and a lucky door prize.

“We’ve had a number of people ask us if we can do it again, so we’re thinking we might make it an annual event.”
