TIMBOON Gold produced one of the rarer wins the Timboon Bowling Club has had in the Western District Bowls Division (WDBD) in recent times on Saturday.
The club’s top side defeated City Gold 72-66 for the first in a number of years according to president Peter Baker.
He said the club was thrilled with the result, but revealed the side almost surrendered a healthy lead late in the encounter.
“We were trying to figure out when was the last time we’d beaten City Gold, it’s been quite a while since we’ve beaten them so we were very happy with our win on Saturday,” Baker said.
“We had our nose in front all day and with about 20 minutes to go, the three rinks had a good lead, it was 16 shots overall with about three or four ends to go.
“I sort of thought then we might be in a pretty good spot but the worst thing was we dropped a three, another dropped a number and the other dropped a number too.
“It wouldn’t have wanted to have gone on for too many more ends (after that).”
Shayne Pudney and Arthur Finch ensured Timboon also walked away with four rinks points, with Pudney defeating Ken Bell 26-20 and Finch accounting for Kevin O’Keefe 24-20.
Brett Mungean almost made it a clean sweep for the club, but he was unable to pull back a narrow deficit late and eventually went down 26-22 to Bryan Sheehan.
Baker, who featured in Mungean’s rink as a third, said the win showed Timboon could hold their own with the division’s top clubs.
“You’d nearly have to say City Gold is always a contender for that fourth position, so to knock off anyone that is a finals contender is a feather in our cap,” he said.
“This week we play Warrnambool Gold, they’re always a contender for the premiership, so it’ll be very interesting seeing how we go against them.
“They have just put in two new greens, which will be slower and will be a good test for everyone I think but we’ll just have to adjust quickly.”
He went on to say the triumph gave them extra confidence of winning the clash at Warrnambool.
“There’s no reason why we can’t do it,” Baker said.
“Last year we had a good win over Warrnambool Gold but that was at home but you go into every game with confidence.
“I’d like to say we’d have a good chance of doing it.”
A win over Warrnambool would see Timboon enter the statewide bye with a 3-1 record, a start to the year Baker said the club could have only dreamed of.
“That’s something we haven’t spoken about but it’d be great to be in the four after playing two of the clubs in the first four rounds,” he said.
“That would be a bonus for the club, most definitely.”
In other pennant results, Timboon Maroon won its division three clash 91-52 over Dennington Thunder while Timboon Red went down 75-64 to City Maroon in division four.
The two sides are set to play away games against Koroit Green and Dennington Titans respectively this weekend.
And Timboon will be represented in the quarter finals of the WDBD men’s pairs this Sunday.
Barry Bowen and Peter Baker won two matches in the knockout competition to move to the final eight, while Arthur Finch joined with City Memorial bowler Bryan Sheehan to progress to the quarter final stage.
