Golf trio wins division final
CAMPERDOWN Golf bowler Craig Skene has admitted his side bowled out of its skin to win the Corangamite Bowls Division’s men’s state triples event last Sunday.

CAMPERDOWN Golf bowler Craig Skene has admitted his side bowled out of its skin to win the Corangamite Bowls Division’s men’s state triples event last Sunday.
Skene and club-mates Glenn Winsall and Paul Richards progressed to the region final after they defeated a Winchelsea outfit 18-11 in the final.
They had earlier won the semi-final against Will Collihole’s Colac outfit 23-7 and had defeated a Birregurra outfit 28-6, while they also overcame cross-town rival Lenny Searle’s team 16-15 in the opening rounds.
Skene said he could not believe how the day transpired on the green for the local trio.
“We had an incredible tournament,” he said.
“Sunday was the day where all three of us beat our respective opponents in each game which is a fair effort.
“We just turned up and it was one of those days where everything went right for us.
“We just had a good day and the scoreboard showed.”
Skene said his side went into the semi-final and final with no fear and full of belief after others had written off their chances.
It was an approach which proved a masterstroke, with the side enjoying a pressure-free atmosphere which ultimately lead to success.
“I said to the others before the game that I’d played some of the other guys before and had beaten them in other games,” Skene said.
“Paul who has come across from Lismore and is only in his second year with us had hardly any knowledge of anyone there and Winnie only knew a few of them.
“But we just said that if we win two games, we win the title and that if we bowl well we would take a bit of beating.
“None of them rated us a chance so we had no pressure – we just walked in and rolled them down and if we got them close it put the pressure back on them. It was one of those days you wish would happen more often.”
Skene, Winsall and Richards will now represent the division at the region final on Sunday, February 21.
They will play the winner of the match between Far Western and Western, with the victor moving onto state level.
“The worst we can do is come second now which is handy and it’s actually played up at Camperdown Golf which is our home green,” Skene said.
“We’ve got no fear and we know if we bowl like we did on Sunday we can push any of those blokes.”
Skene thanked the club’s supporters – John Molan, Max Johnston, Jill Rantall, Kev Conheady and Billy Conheady – for making the trip to Colac.
He said the trio was delighted to share the result with them.
“It’s a real thrill because these association events don’t come around all that often,” Skene said.
In other division events, Val Hutchison and Stuart Trigg claimed victory over D. Coverdale and Ron Cameron 19-17 in the final.
Hutchison and Trigg defeated the Inglis pairing 23-5 in the semi-final while Coverdale and Cameron beat G. Gourley and M. Menzies 18-15 to reach the decider.
The winners now head to Portland RSL Memorial for the region event on Sunday, February 14.
In the women’s singles final Colac City’s Coral Hanson defeated Winchelsea’s Erin Baulch 25-16, with Hanson now bound for the region final at Terang on Sunday, February 7.
The last of the division’s state events will be completed this Sunday, with the over 60s men’s pairs final and final rounds of the men’s state singles to be completed.
