Grand final bound
A COME-from-behind final quarter victory has earned Cobden’s under 16 footballers a spot in this weekend’s Hampden League grand final for the first time in seven years.
A COME-from-behind final quarter victory has earned Cobden’s under 16 footballers a spot in this weekend’s Hampden League grand final for the first time in seven years.
The junior Bombers booted home six goals in the final quarter to clench a one-point victory over South Warrnambool last Sunday.
The Roosters were quick on the scoreboard, kicking three goals two in the opening term while containing the home side to just one behind.
The momentum continued for the Roosters, who were able to restrict scoring opportunities for the Bombers for the first three quarters of the game, which saw the Bombers down 30-points at three-quarter time.
The final term proved the winning one, with the Bombers “never give in” attitude resulting in an additional six goals on the board.
Riley Chamberlain and Darcy Hutchins both contributed three goals apiece, while Kurtis Baker, Campbell Walsh and Parker Walsh each kicked one.
Among the best for the Bombers were Campbell Walsh, Darcy Hutchins, Archie Taylor, Parker Walsh, Hamish Dean and Riley Chamberlain.
A packed Bombers changerooms chanted the club theme song loud and proud following the spectacular last quarter comeback.
“We as a club are very proud of all the boys, to watch them come from behind and win by a point was just incredible,” junior club president Chris Walsh said.
“We’re all very excited and can’t wait to see them take on Koroit in the grand final this weekend.”
The two sides met twice during the home and away season, with a win going each way.
The under 16s are coached by Brett Taylor, with Leigh Walsh and Matt Kemp as assistants.
Sunday’s decider, which will begin at 2pm at Warrnambool’s Reid Oval, is expected to be another tight one.
