Grand final for Gold

THE Pomborneit Gold women are through to the grand final of the Colac District Cricket Association women’s competition after a 46 run win in the semi-final over Carlisle River at Pomborneit last Sunday.

Batting first, the Gold women never got going, losing regular wickets throughout as they made 7/102 from their 25 overs.

“No-one really got themselves in and looked comfortable,” Gold skipper Samantha Coxon said.

“It looked like we’d be bowled out cheaply at stages - while it wasn’t pretty I’m proud of the way our team fought our batting innings out.”

Coxon, opening the batting, made 16, Jess Moulden hit 13 before being bowled, but it was Gold’s lower order who got the team to a competitive total.

Lucia Clarke scored a bright 18 from 14 balls, Shelby Mahony, batting at nine made 13 not out while Lenise Mantell, coming in at number five, doggedly held up an end with an unbeaten seven.

“Lucia is showing all the benefits of the higher cricket she’s played this season, her and Shelby made important runs that boosted our score.

“Full credit to Lenise, she really dug in, offered great support and made sure we batted out our overs and could post a competitive score.”

Carlisle River never really threatened in the run chase and were bowled out for 56 in 19.1 overs.

Coxon was outstanding with the new ball, taking 3/5 from five overs, Lucia Clarke bowled with good pace taking 2/13, with a wicket each to Tayla Reynolds, Jess Moulden and Neave Thompson.

“We were really switched on in the field,” Coxon said.

“I was rapt with our bowling, everyone played their role, Lucia was really threatening with the way she was able to swing the ball, she bowled sharply.”

In Sunday’s grand final, Pomborneit Gold will play Birregurra at CMTP Oval.

“Birregurra are a well drilled team, they field extremely well.

“No doubt we are going to have to play our best to beat them, I’m expecting a really hard fought game.”

Pomborneit’s under 17 girls have finished their season after a semi-final loss to Tomahawk Creek at Colac’s Western Reserve last Friday night.

Creek batted first, scoring 4/136 from its 20 overs.

Isabella Wain led the Pomborneit bowlers with 2/19s, with Meg Nolan and Marissa Whitehead taking a wicket each.

In reply, Pomborneit was bowled out for 74 in 17 overs.

Opener Lilli Saarikallio top scored with 22 from 35 balls with two boundaries, with Isla Spokes making 13 and Isabelle Pilley nine.
