Great day for Pies
CAMPERDOWN’S senior footballers tasted victory for the first time in 2026 with a 29 point win over Hamilton on Saturday.

The Magpies led all day in the round 11 Hampden League clash at the Leura Oval to record a 14.10.94 to 10.5.65 win.
“It was a bit of a relief for everyone,” Camperdown coach Clinton Thomas said.
“It’s one of those things; it feels like we have played good footy while having a few games that haven’t gone our way, so it’s good to get one in our favour.”
While the game was tight for most of the first three quarters, Thomas felt the Magpies were always close to breaking away from Hamilton.
“We sort of had a feeling that it was going to bust open at any stage, and to Hamilton’s credit they were staying in the game with their centre clearances.
“But the rest of the game, we were controlling pretty comfortably, it felt like it was only a matter of time before we had our opportunity to run away with it.”
Two of Camperdown’s favourite sons in Cameron Spence and Fraser Lucas both celebrated their 150th senior appearance in black and white in the win.
“I’ve been saying that club milestones, like 150 games, moving forward in football that’s going to become rarer, it’s not going to be something you’re seeing as commonly as what you have historically.
“So for guys that are able to commit to a club for that length of time in today’s modern era, and admittedly the boys have had a bit of time away here and there, but to be able to accumulate those games, Cam and Fraser are just great clubmen first, they think of the team and think of the club well ahead of their own needs.”
Spence in particular had a big game, gathering 35 possessions, including 19 kicks and 16 handballs.
“Cam got plenty of it, he doesn’t waste the football at all, he just used the ball well.
“He was kicking it and passing it at around 90 per cent efficiency, out of his 35 odd possessions there was barely a wasted one there.”
Harry Sumner had 26 possessions and 13 tackles and was named as the Magpies best.
“Harry got plenty of it and was an absolute savage in the contest, he was great.”
Luke Kavenagh led the Magpie goalkickers with four majors.
“Kav hurt his ankle the last time we played Hamilton, he kicked four goals against them in round one and that was virtually by half-time, he was on track for a big day, but hurt the ankle and he was out for quite a while.
“He’s been back for three games now, and he’s really starting to build some confidence and find his feet again, four goals is a great return, he had a good day out.”
This weekend sees the Hampden League have its mid-season break, with the next game for the Magpies on July 11 against North Warrnambool at Bushfield.
