Green light for Mount Fyans Wind Farm
CONSTRUCTION of the third largest wind farm to be approved in the past ten years will soon begin in Mortlake after the Mount Fyans Wind Farm received the greenlight from the Victorian Government.

Over the weekend Minister for Planning Sonya Kilkenny announced the approval of the 400-megawatt Mt Fyans Wind Farm just outside Mortlake, saying the project would help to harness Victoria’s world-class wind resources to deliver cheaper, renewable power for almost 250,000 homes.
“We’re making good decisions faster that will still protect the local environment, while providing Victorian households with cheaper energy,” she said.
The wind farm will be made up of 81 turbines.
The construction phase will see the creation of around 100 jobs, as well as ten full-time local jobs once the wind farm becomes operational.
The Victorian Government cited the transition to renewable energy powering the state as the catalyst for approval, with wind now the biggest contributor to renewable electricity generation in Victoria – accounting for 21 percent of the state’s monthly electricity generation in the first half of 2025.
Member for Western Victoria Jacinta Ermacora said Victorians would benefit from cheaper power bills thanks to the investment in renewables.
“Renewable energy is the cheapest form of new build energy available,” she said.
“It helps bring down power prices and creates great new jobs for locals.”
This project had been referred to a planning panel for consideration, which the Victorian Government has defended as including wide-ranging consultation with residents, community groups and government agencies.
The panel recommended the project could proceed, with measures taken to protect local biodiversity, including bats and brolgas.
The project will be located in the newly-announced South West Renewable Energy Zone, one of six areas identified as most suitable to host new renewable energy generation across Victoria through the Victorian Transmission Plan.
Victoria has met every renewable energy target it has set to date and is well on the way to meeting the next target of 65 per cent renewable energy generation by 2030 and 95 per cent by 2035.
Minister for Climate Action Lily D’Ambrosio said renewable energy would provide a secure source of cheap renewable energy for homes, businesses and industry across the whole state in addition to providing a boost in employment.
“The Mt Fyans Wind Farm will not only provide cheaper and reliable energy for hundreds of thousands of Victorians – it’ll also provide a major boost to the economy of south west Victoria,” she said.
In response to the announcement, Moyne Shire Council mayor Karen Foster said council would take some time to assess the permit.
“Council has been advised of the Minister for Planning’s decision to issue a permit for the Mt Fyans Wind Farm over the weekend,” she said.
“Officers are working through the permit to ascertain how it responds to the issues raised in council’s submissions.
“During the Minister’s assessment process for the application and further information provided by Woolnorth Renewables, Moyne made a number of submissions which are available on council’s website.”
