Guides resuming for 2025 – come and try
WITH Girl Guides staring up from next Monday, the Camperdown Girl Guides are inviting families to have some ‘come and try’ sessions.
The ‘come and try’ will have three sessions for free for families looking to give Girl Guides a go, with sessions open for girls in grades three and above.
Guide leader Glenda McIlveen said it was a way for children to give Girl Guides a try to see if it was something they would like to do without financial pressures.
“Sometimes children like to try things – they might have an idea, but they’re not sure,” she said.
“With ‘come and try’, there’s no cost – if they don’t like it, they’ll find something else that they do.
“Parents don’t want to pay out money for something their children don’t like, so we give it a go and try it for three sessions.
“It’s all about giving the children an opportunity to have a go and see if they like it.”
Girl Guides runs on Mondays during school terms from 3.30-5pm, with the first guides session to run on Monday, February 10.
Mrs McIlveen said parents would not have to worry about picking their children up from school to take them to Girl Guides – there is a walking bus service available from Camperdown primary schools.
“We have a service where we collect the children after school and walk down to the guide hall because it’s not that far from the back gates of the Camperdown primary college,” she said.
“That way, children from St Pats can walk behind the church and join the group down to the guide hall.
“That saves parents having to go out of work to pick their children up.
“It’s one of our services to help the children get there.”
Mrs McIlveen said she hoped the ‘come and try’ sessions would be “a lot of fun” for new attendees as well as returning guides.
“The first night is usually a lot of games and getting to know the other girls, some guide traditions, looking at things guides do during the year, and just experiencing – most of the children they’ll already know from their schools because it’s open to ages seven to 12,” she said.
“We’re happy to look at children slightly younger, but seven is a good age to start.”
Anyone who is interested in trying Girl Guides is invited to contact Mrs McIlveen on 0438 090 906 or 5593 2917.
