Half a million containers recycled locally
CORANGAMITE Shire residents have taken full advantage of the Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) with more than half a million containers recycled since the scheme launched last year.
The scheme has proven a funding boon for the region with more than $54,000 in refunds collected or distributed to eligible community groups.
Under the CDS Victorians can exchange eligible drink containers for a 10-cent refund. The containers are then processed to be recycled in to new drink containers, providing a circular economy of materials to prevent waste ending up in landfill.
West zone network operator TOMRA Cleanaway confirmed more than 165,000 containers had been refunded across three sites in Terang, Cobden and Timboon since Christmas.
“Across the whole CDS Vic West Zone we have seen container returns increase over this end of year holiday period, with multiple days seeing over 1 million containers returned by the West Zone community,” a TOMRA Cleanaway spokesperson said.
“Residents in the Corangamite Shire have shown their enthusiasm for the new Victorian Container Deposit Scheme, having returned over 545,000 eligible containers through the three refund points in the region since the scheme commence on November 1 in 2023.
“This means more than $54,000 has gone back into the pockets of local residents and community groups.”
TOMRA Cleanaway’s West Zone operation has collected more than 60 million containers, putting more than $6 million back into the pockets of residents.
On January 11 the Victorian Government announced the CDS scheme had surpassed 100 million returned containers since the program launched, netting users over $10 million in refunds.
All containers returned through the TOMRA Cleanaway collection point network for the CDS pass through technology for audit and verification purposes, which achieve clean, source-separated commodities that support Victoria’s transition to a circular economy.
Those wanting to return their containers are encouraged to download the CDS Vic west zone app.
Collection points are available at:
49 Dow Street, Terang;
16 Neylon Street, Cobden; and
