TALENTEDCamperdown footballer Hamish Sinnott is keen to pull on the Rebels jumper for his debut match tonight (Thursday).
The 17 year-old Magpie earned selection in the GMV Rebels Boys’ NAB League under 19 squad last year but was forced to endure a lengthy wait for his debut match after the 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID pandemic.
Speaking to the Chronicle on Thursday morning, Hamish – or ‘Hammer’ as he is affectionately known – said he was excited to be getting back on the ground.
“The nerves are starting to kick in a little, but I’m just really excited to be back playing again.
“Covid put a stop to footy last year, and it’s been a long 12 months, but I used the time as an extended pre-season; doing a lot of running, gym work and ball skills.”
The Mercy Regional College year 12 student said term one had been a busy one, combining his studies with training sessions in both Ballarat and Camperdown.
While the Rebels games will take priority this year, he was still hoping to be able to play alongside older brother Zach in the Magpies’ senior squad whenever the fixtures permit.
“It would be great to play a few games at home with Zach but I’ll just have to see how the draw pans out. Hopefully I can play here (Camperdown) when we (Rebels) have a bye round.”
Sinnott expects to run out with the starting line-up tonight and anticipates he’ll play in the back pocket or flank.
Not turning 18 until the end of November, he is grateful for the support of his parents.
“Mum and dad have been great; we’re on the road quite abit with training and games so I’m grateful for their support.
“Being selected in the squad has enabled me to play alongside some of the best junior footballers and learn a lot from some great coaches.”
The 2021 NAB League season will start in sensational form against traditional rival, the Geelong Falcons, at Wendouree’s C.E. Brown Reserve tonight.
The match will kick off at 5pm, followed by the GMV Rebels’ under 17 game from 7.30pm.
The night promises to be a great promotion of the outstanding junior talent from across western Victoria and a large crowd is anticipated.
The night will see 19 debutants play their first game, which is exciting not only for the program but for the players, their families and their local community clubs.
Head coach David Loader said the teams were “really excited” to head into week one after a long break away from football.
“It’s also exciting that the games are in Ballarat on Easter Thursday night; it’s a real highlight to showcase the talent from across our region,” Loader said.
“We have 19 players who will be debuting with the side; this is such a great opportunity for those players to go head to head with one of the competition powerhouses in the Geelong Falcons.
“To have both the 19s and the 17s playing on the same night in Ballarat is a great result for the talent pathway in western Victoria.”
