This Week in Heytesbury is all about the highlights from the 52nd Australian Indoor Biased Bowls Nationals in Devonport, Tasmania.
Our contingent of 10 players set their sights on nationals glory in the Apple Isle and all the action started after the Monday practice tournament, bright and early on Tuesday morning.
We’ll only be focusing on the events that feature Heytesbury players: Ladies Pairs (Pam Wines), Mixed Pairs (Arthur Finch), Ladies Triples (Pam Dwyer), Ladies Fours (Jenny Meade), Mens Fours, (Brett Mungean, Scott Pierce), Mixed Fours (Allen Armistead, Noah Mungean; Bec Heard (playing for Queensland)) and Girls Singles (Lara Mungean).
In the ladies pairs, Pam Wines and Jodie Jones went down to Queensland 1 by three shots and then lost by four shots to the second Victorian side of Anne Draffen and Heather Hopkinson.
In the mixed pairs, Arthur Finch and Jacinta Marney had a three shot loss to Tasmania and then a five shot loss to the other Victorian team of Shane Manifold and Sue Cleeland.
In the ladies triples, Cindy Brodie, Pam Dwyer and Joanne Webster had a win over New South Wales 14-10 followed by a three shot loss to Queensland.
In the ladies fours, Debbie Keane, Bev Hutchins, Jenny Meade and Barb Draffen had a 18-14 win over New South Wales followed by a 19-11 win over Queensland.
In the men’s fours, Brett Mungean, Brendan Keane, Adrian Ballinger and Scott Pierce lost to Tasmania by three shots but picked up a win against the other Victorian side of Rodney Jones, Stuart Lacy, Craig Fleming and Mark Broadwood, 19-13.
In the mixed fours, Allen Armistead, Noah Mungean, Yvonne Clark and Margaret Poile defeated New South Wales 25-12 and Tasmania 15-14.
With the Queensland mixed fours, Jim Bullow Rob McRabb, Bec Heard and Hermiese Constable defeated Tasmania 17-11 and then the Victorian side of Ian Hedger, Peter Neal, Michelle Tait and Rebecca Brodie.
Jim, Rob, Bec and Hermiese were all originally named as emergencies in the Victorian side but were assigned to Queensland after they were short of players.
In the girls singles, Lara Mungean had a 20-16 win over New South Wales 20-16 and then defeated Victorian Sarah Jackson.
Day two saw Victoria win 24/36 games, with four draws.
In the ladies pairs, Pam Wines and Jodie drew with South Australia and lossed by four shots to the second Queensland side.
In the mixed pairs, Arthur and Jacinta defeated South Australia 16-14 and Queensland, 15-8.
In the ladies triples, Cindy, Pam Dwyer and Joanne lost to Gillian Phillips, Dawn Carey and Sue Kerr by four shots and then defeated Tasmania 22-12.
In the ladies fours, Debbie, Bev, Jenny and Barb defeated Elizabeth Kierce, Sandi Grano, Betty McKay and Trish Speechley then lost to New South Wales by nine shots.
In the men’s fours, Brett, Brendan, Adrian and Scott defeated New South Wales 22-9 but lost to Queensland by eight shots.
In the mixed fours, Allen, Noah, Yvonne and Margaret lost to Ian Hedger, Peter Neal, Michelle Tait and Rebecca Brodie 17-19 and drew with New South Wales.
With the Queensland mixed fours side, Jim, Rob, Bec and Hermiese lost to Queensland 12-13 and then South Australia by seven.
In the girls singles, Lara Mungean had a comprehensive win over New South Wales.
Day three produced more solid results with 29/36 games won, with two draws for the day.
In the ladies pairs, Pam Wines and Jodie defeated New South Wales 22-16 but lost to Tasmania.
In the mixed pairs, Arthur and Jacinta had a narrow 13-12 victory over Tasmania and currently sit in third place on percentage.
In the ladies triples, Cindy, Pam Dwyer and Joanne lost to New South Wales by five and was defeated by Tasmania.
In the ladies fours, Debbie, Bev, Jenny and Barb defeated Tasmania 22-9 but went down by three to South Australia and are sitting in fourth by percentage.
In the men’s fours, Brett, Brendan, Adrian and Scott defeated South Australia 15-11 and Queensland 13-8 to now sit second on percentage.
In the mixed fours, Allen, Noah, Yvonne and Margaret lost to Queensland but defeated South Australia 23-12 and now sit fifth outright.
The Queensland mixed fours side of Jim, Rob, Bec and Hermiese defeated New South Wales 36-11 and Tasmania 14-12 and now sits fourth outright.
In the girls singles, Lara Mungean defeated Tasmania 22-18 and New South Wales 28-9 and now sits second on percentage.
Victoria had 26/36 wins and two draws.
In the ladies pairs, Pam Wines and Jodie defeated New South Wales14-10 but lost by nine to Tasmania.
In the mixed pairs, Arthur and Jacinta defeated Queensland 22-6 and Tasmania27-5.
In the ladies triples, Cindy, Pam Dwyer and Joanne lost to South Australia by eight then defeated Queensland 17-13.
In the ladies fours, Debbie, Bev, Jenny and Barb defeated Queensland 25-6 and South Australia 24-6.
In the men’s fours, Brett, Brendan, Adrian and Scott defeated New South Wales 25-9 and Tasmania.
In the mixed fours, Allen, Noah, Yvonne and Margaret lost to Tasmania and defeated New South Wales 25-8.
For the Queensland mixed fours side, Jim, Rob, Bec and Hermiese defeated New South Wales 32-9 and then won 18-10 over the second New South Wales team.
Day five was a final push to secure one of those elusive Australian medals and in some cases, titles.
For Victoria, the day finished with 11/18 wins and no draws.
In the ladies pairs, Pam Wines and Jodie lost to South Australia by five shots and finished eighth for the week.
In the mixed pairs, Arthur and Jacinta played well but lost by three shots to New South Wales to place fourth for the week.
In the ladies triples, Cindy, Pam Dwyer and Joanne defeated South Australia 23-11 to finish sixth.
In the ladies fours, Debbie, Bev, Jenny and Barb had a tight battle with the other Tasmania side who picked up two shots to win and take bronze.
In the men’s fours, Brett, Brendan, Adrian and Scott defeated South Australian 16-12 but were beaten to the silver medal by the other Victorian side on percentage and placed third for the week.
Congratulations to 2022 men’s fours bronze medallists Brett Mungean, Brendan Keane, Adrian Ballinger and Scott Pierce.
In the mixed fours, Allen, Noah, Yvonne and Margaret played the Queensland mixed fours side of Jim, Rob, Bec and Hermiese.
Victoria won 23-20 but had to wait on results to see if they were able to secure a medal.
Unfortunately they were one point short and placed fourth.
The Queensland mixed fours placed third on percentage.
Congratulations to bronze medallists (playing for Queensland) Jim Bullow, Rob McRabb, Bec Heard and Hermiese Constable.
In the girls singles, Lara Mungean played Queensland’s Holly Blyth for gold but was defeated.
After day five Victoria secured second place for the Jack Gore trophy on 254 points, just 45 points behind the winner Tasmania.
For the Bill Newman trophy, Victoria was third on 39 points, 14 points behind the winner, Tasmania.
Other medallists for Victoria included Karen Brodie (bronze, ladies singles), Anne Draffen and heather Hopkinson (silver, ladies singles), Glenn Sargent and George Draffen (gold, men’s pairs), Gillian Phills, Down Carey and Sue Kerr (bronze, ladies triples), Mark Broadwood, Craig Fleming, Start Lacy and Rodney Jones (silver, men’s fours), Ian Hedger, Peter Neal, Michelle Tait and Rebecca Brodie (gold, mixed fours).
