FORTY-two players travelled to Simpson last Wednesday to enjoy a game of indoor bowls.

Seven mats went down and despite the cold weather outside some hot action was played indoors.

Players from Heytesbury Association (Simpson, Laang-Ecklin, Timboon Lawn, Camperdown, Scotts Creek, Glenormiston and Cobden), Colac Association and also from Indoor Bowls Warrnambool all enjoyed the games which were played in good spirits.

Two teams had all three wins for the night.

Runners-up were Rita Pasque, Kelvin Rundle and Lyndon Rogerson with 88 points while the winners were Deb Cheslett, Paul Maher and Fred Salmon with 92 points.

Up north there were nine players from Heytesbury Association contesting the national championships in Caloundra.

In the mens’ pairs, Brett Mungean played with Sean Ingram and finished in 8th place while in the men’s fours, Noah Mungean played with Adrian Ballinger, Rodney Jones and Ian Hedger and finished in 7th place.

In the mixed pairs, Pam Dwyer played with Les Clarke and finished in 6th place while in the women’s pairs, Pam Wines played with Maureen Drennan and also finished in 6th place.

In the mixed fours, Allen Armistead played with Sarah Jackson, Elaine Pitts and Jim Bullow and with four wins and a draw, finished in outright fourth place.

On debut for Victoria, Harmony played in the junior girls’ singles and was in bronze medal contention coming into the last day.

The last match for Harmony was tight against the Tasmanian junior Jasmine and she finished in third.

Unfortunately for Harmony, the result was three shots short and she finished the week in a respectable fourth place.

In the womens’ triples, Lara Mungean played with Joanne Webster and Gillian Phillips and with five wins out of nine, Lara and the team managed to finish third on percentage.

For Lara, this was her first year in the big league (coming up from juniors last year) and a well-deserved bronze medal.

In the other mixed fours team for Victoria, Peter Baker played with Diane Tobin, Michelle Tait and Peter Neal and with six wins and two draws out of nine games matches, Peter and the team finished in outright third, bringing home a bronze medal.

Arthur Finch, fresh from hisvictory in the VIBBA (state) mens’ Champion of Champions title, also played in the men’s singles for Victoria in Queensland.

Arthur played extremely well, with seven wins and one draw, led from start to finish and secured first place.

The focus now turns towards the Trans-Tasman Test between Australia and New Zealand and for Heytesbury, its very own Brett Mungean has been asked to trial for the national team in Ballarat next January.

This Wednesday sees the conclusion of the Heytesbury Association Championship events – the HIBBA Drawn Fours Championship at Camperdown.

The team from Simpson and Timboon Lawn have the bye in the first round and the draw is as follows: Glenormiston (Harmony Rasmussen, Lyn Farrell, Jim Wallace and Max Heard (s) will play Camperdown (Wal Body, Liz Riches, Gordon Weller and Gary Body (s)) and the winner of that match will play Scotts Creek (Marlene Page, Ian Cunnington, Neville Robb and Peter Baker (s)) in the semi-final.
