A STRONG bowling performance was the catalyst for a stunning opening round win for Heytesbury Rebels on Saturday.

The Rebels, who went winless last season, defeated Terang by 10 wickets at Timboon Recreation Reserve within the space of 39 overs.

The home side bowled the visitors out for 42 before chasing the runs down with ease.

Rebels’ skipper Joel Moriarty said Adam Doak (2/18) and Bayley Thompson (1/13) set the tone with the ball before Paul Vogels (3/9) and brother Michael (2/0) cleaned up Terang’s tail.

Simon Harkness (26 not out) and Tom Hunt (14 not out) then shared an unbeaten partnership to see Heytesbury snare the points.

“It was a good way to start – our bowling, I can’t really comment on the batting, was really exciting,” Moriarty said.

“We didn’t really make any mistakes. I think I can count on one hand the amount of balls we bowled on leg stump or down leg side so we stuck to our plans really well.

“It was then nice to get the runs none down, it was good to see Harko and Tom Hunt get them easily.”

Moriarty said he expected his side to start strongly, but did not foresee that strong of a performance first up.

“I did but I didn’t expect it to that extent,” he said.

“Terang obviously didn’t have the best day, I think they’ll be more competitive as we go on but I’d thought we’d start well.

“But I’d say we probably exceeded expectations.”

Moriarty said the win would give his side momentum ahead of a tough challenge against powerhouse Mortlake.

The two sides will clash at Timboon on Friday, with only SWC’s top grade playing this weekend.

“It probably just builds confidence with the group,” Moriarty said.

“You can be a little bit nervous being the first game, you train for so long but you never know how your first game is goingto go.

“To have that out of the way we now we can go into Mortlake with a bit of confidence.”

The Rebels division two side shared the points with Boorcan in the opening round, with their match washed out before a ball was bowled.
