HEYTESBURY Rebels will now go into the Christmas break sitting top of the South West Cricket ladder.

Rebels coach Simon Harkness said while he was “thrilled” with his side’s current position, they wouldn’t “get too far ahead of themselves” given they are yet to face Cobden, Pomborneit or a full strength Bookaar.

“After taking out the flag last season we’re certainly hungry to do it again this year but in saying that, there’s several other clubs who are just as hungry,” Harkness said.

“We’re only percentage above Pombo on the ladder so it will be interesting to see how the remaining rounds pan out. The Christmas break has come at a great time and we’re all looking forward to that and will come back refreshed in the new year.

“We’re looking forward to facing Cobden and Pomborneit in the coming rounds.”

Reflecting on last weekend’s eight-wicket victory over Terang, Harkness praised his side’s bowlers who “really gave them (Terang) nothing.”

“Our bowlers really set the game up for us; there was no weak links.”

Harkness made special mention of Bayley Thompson 3/14 off 10, along with Paul Vogels 2/12 off seven and Thomas Hunt 2/14 off nine.

Chasing Terang’s 77 runs, the Rebels finished with 2/81; Harkness leading the way with an unbeaten 40, supported by Mohammed Hassan 10 not out.

The Rebels’ division two side also enjoyed victory last weekend, defeating Boorcan by 34 runs – 123 to 89.

Ryan Jones 33 and Marcus Hickey 25 were the best of the batters while best bowling figures went to Scott Thompson 3/10 off eight and Jordan Fowler 5/27 off eight.
