Historical society celebrates 50 years
TERANG and District Historical Society recently celebrated five decades of recording the region’s history with a special appearance at a dinner to mark the occasion.

TERANG and District Historical Society recently celebrated five decades of recording the region’s history with a special appearance at a dinner to mark the occasion.
Bernard Salt, Australia’s leading demographer and a Terang native, attended at short notice while visiting the area.
Mr Salt had been a member of the society as a student at Terang High School and spoke fondly of his time growing up in the “wonderfully supportive” Terang community.
The guest speaker at the celebratory dinner was inaugural secretary Harold Eller.
Mr Salt in fact had been taught by Harold and his wife, Jeanette.
He noted Jeanette’s teaching of Australian history had sparked the interest which was to become the catalyst for his interest in history.
The Terang and District Historical Society continues to flourish under the leadership of Bob McIntosh.
The society has recently completed the installation of a historic windmill in the median strip at the eastern end of the town.
The windmill, an original constructed by Caleb Fuller, who commenced the manufacture business in Terang about 1910.
Hundreds of windmills were dispersed across Australia notably on the Terrinallum Soldier Settlers Estate after World War One.
The society meets monthly and fosters a strong sense of maintaining records and interest in the district past, whilst preserving the details for future generations.
