Home sweet home
THE largest building project Cooinda has undertaken in decades has come to fruition, with this week marking the official opening of a new home for high-needs clients.

Cooinda hosted a celebratory opening of its new specialist disability accommodation (SDA) home at 51 Dow Street on Wednesday.
The five-bedroom, state-of-the-art facility will be home to four high-needs residents with design and décor centred around improving their quality of life.
Cooinda chief executive officer Janice Harris said the completion of the new facility was an exciting step forward to support high-needs clients.
“We’re excited after starting the project in 2020, so to finally see the finished product is exciting for both staff and the residents moving in,” she said.
“Some of the residents and families still had not been inside so it was exciting to have a look and see the living space and facilities for them.”
The completion of Cooinda’s biggest accommodation project in years has sparked optimism for further improvement projects on the horizon.
“A lot of our residential sites are quite old so in the next few years we will have a plan going forward for refurbishing some of them or selling them off and building some other new facilities, which might be smaller unit-type accommodation rather than the group homes,” Ms Harris said.
On behalf of everyone at Cooinda, Ms Harris thanked those involved with philanthropic trusts, bequests and the wider community for the support which made the construction possible.
“All of it goes towards improving our facilities for the future,” she said.
