Hot conditions for bowls

HOT and windy conditions greeted bowlers for round seven of the Corangamite Bowls division one Saturday pennant.

Camperdown’s division one side travelled to Colac to take on the cellar dwellers, Colac Central, who were yet to win a game this season.

Camperdown came away disappointed after winning three of the four rinks but losing by 22 shots to an in-form Colac Central skipper, Ian Johnson, and his team-mates on one rink.

The best performing rink for Camperdown was Matthew Brewer, Len Searle, Ray Bourke and Henry Henderson.

They played the rink of Ron Chapman.

With a halfway score of 13-9 they were in control for the best part of the game, winning 24-15.

The rink of Darren Coverdale, Barry Atchison, Lud Gungl and Maria Van Someren also had a good tussle against Gavin Finn’s rink and won 23-19.

The rink of Ron Cameron, Fred Salon, Kel Rundle and Brad Wilson had a close game against the rink of Brian Finn and team.

With the scores level five times during the match, the Cameron rink snared a six near the close of the match to put them in front and then hung on to prevail, 27-24.

Luke Wright, Darren Page, Vicki Brebner and Harry Van Someren came up against in-form skipper Ian Johnson and found it had to make inroads, going down to the Central rink 13-35.

The Colac Central club won overall, 93-87.

Division three played host club Colac City and found the going tough on their carpet green.

Although winning two of the four rinks they were against a team that left nothing in the tank, defeated by 18 shots.

Les Pearson, Gerard Broderick, Brent Noonan and Max Rippon played Pat Howard’s rink and had a good win, 21-17.

Graeme Chamberlain, Paul Brebner, Pip Robinson and Graeme Taylor had a great game against Lois Inglis and led early in the game 12-1 but City came home with a wet sail, Camperdown prevailing by one shot, 20-19.

Ron Absalom, Bert Sloetjes, Deborah Noon and Jim Boyd played the rink of Rob Copeland and had a close battle all day.

The scores were level on several occasions but City made five shots on the last end, prevailing 18-15.

Tom Hose, Darren Coverdale, Barney Dickson and Gordon Weller had a day to forget as they found themselves up against the rink of Steve Fenelli, going down 8-28.

Division five was able to sit back and put their heels up having received a forfeit from Apollo Bay.

Next week division one will travel to face last year’s premiership winners and the current ladder leaders.

In the next six ends they only managed to score on two, but still held the lead 15-7.

They held on during the last five ends to win comfortably, 27-13.

The rink of Brad Wilson, Les Pearson, Harry Van Someren and Ron Simcox took on Peter James’ side for what was a difficult game.

Brad’s rink was holding shots many times but the opposition’s third and skip worked their magic and led 4-7 on the sixth end and 8-14 on the 12th.

With five ends to go Camperdown scored 11 shots to two and went down by just three, 19-22.

On rink seven, Maria Van Someren, Henry Henderson, Graeme Chamberlain and Donna Watts played Carol Wilson’s team.
