Norman Houghton OAM will speak about one of his recent books ‘The Plains Line – Stations on the Gheringhap-Cressy Maroona Railway’ at the History Rooms on Sunday, May 26 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm.

Mr Houghton OAM has written more than 40 books on various topics from the Colac and Geelong areas, including historical features within the Camperdown area.

His most recent book talks about the historic Derrinallum station, where trains would roll in to collect scoria ballast from Mount Elephant.

Derrinallum Lismore History Group member Avon Buchholz said Mr Houghton OAM’s book was an “excellent local history book” with photos, diagrams and maps alongside his research.

“Norman is an enthusiastic, entertaining and knowledgeable speaker,” she said.

“The railway opened in 1913 (111 years ago) and contributed significantly to the economic progress of our district.

“Books are available at Wooltrack Store Lismore and at the History Rooms on the day.”

Ms Buchholz said Mr Houghton OAM would provide a fascinating talk given his previous experience.

“Norman is a member of the Colac and Geelong Historical Societies and Light Rail Research Society of Australia,” she said.

“He is a current and founding member of the Forrest Historical Society, Beech Forest Historical Society and Australian Forest History Society.

“Norman was given an OAM for his services to community history in the 2021 Australia Day Honours.”

All are welcome to attend the talk, and those interested are asked to RSVP to 0490 078 420 by Friday, May 24.

The History Rooms are located at 46 Main Street, Derrinallum.
