Callaway house came out on top this year at the carnival, which junior school house captains Edie Alexander and Harry Salmon said was “exciting”.

The pair have stepped into the captaincy role this year to represent their house, alongside Grace Askew and Xavier Richardson as junior school captains of Narragoort and Milla Lowhnan and Shylah Bellis as junior school captains of Halladale.

Grace said she was inspired to make the school a better place, which motivated her to nominate herself for the role.

“I thought I always wanted to do something like be a house captain,” she said.

“I’ve always liked Junior School Council and everything else.

“I thought being a leader would be kind of cool and I like thinking of ideas and making the school a better place.

“I’m looking forward to cheering everyone on and getting my ideas out there.”

The captains last year worked on a project called the buddy bench, where they set up a bench in the school for students who couldn’t find a friend to sit on when they were alone and someone else could come and join them to be their friend.

Milla said she was looking forward to working on a similar project in her role as house captain.

“I want to do something like the buddy bench to bring some more people together,” she said.

“I’m a very kind and bubbly person and I’m willing to make a friend with anyone and talk to anyone.

“I’ll encourage everyone in sports days for everyone to have a good time.

“I like supporting everyone and seeing everyone have a go at things.

“I like seeing people encouraging other people to have a go at things.”

In a similar vein, Shylah said she also wanted to see students in her Halladale house give it their all.

“I want to try to get everyone’s ideas to be heard,” she said.

“I love the sports events and cheering everyone on at sports days.

“I like seeing everyone have a go at everything and cheering for my house.”

Chasing the win of the swimming carnival, Edie said Callaway house students were eyeing the cross country and athletics days next.

“I like being a leader and cheering everyone on at sports days and I love doing them as well,” she said.

“I would like to do something like the buddy bench as well.

“I just want to cheer everyone on in the sports days.”

Harry said he wanted to create a welcoming environment for new students and was looking forward to future events.

“I thought I would be a welcoming person to new students coming to this school and joining Callaway’s house,” he said.

“I thought being a house captain would be fun so I thought I would give it a try.

“I’m most looking forward to the sports days and cheering on my house.”

Xavier Richardson of Narragoort house was absent on the day.
