In appreciation of mothers
MORTLAKE College primary students were busy baking in the lead-up to a special Mother’s Day afternoon tea last Friday.
The school hosted a Mother’s Day afternoon tea on Friday, with in excess of 50 families in attendance.
The festivities began with a video featuring messages of love and appreciation from the students towards their families, before all involved had the opportunity to mingle and enjoy a delicious afternoon tea which the students themselves had prepared.
Mortlake College Prep-Six coordinator Michelle Carmody said it was an exciting occasion to be able to bring together so many families from within the primary cohort.
“This is the third year we’ve done a Mother’s Day afternoon tea, with a new theme picked every year,” she said.
“Our theme this year was blooms because we’re all going to grow.
“We have so many families coming in with mothers, grandmothers, aunties and a few dads.
“It’s just a great community effort to put on a way of connecting with our families.
“The students from the school cooked all the food in our home economics room, and I had some students set up everything on the morning.”
Mrs Carmody said building strong connections among students and families was a point of emphasis for Mortlake College.
“We do as many things as we can to bring everyone together because we’re a small community,” she said.
“That’s a really positive aspect of our school – we know our students really well, from Prep to Year 12.
“Our current Year 12 students were the ones I taught in Year Two.
“We know all our families really well, and events like this are a way we can get to know everyone on a first-name basis rather than just discussing how their child is going at school.
“It’s a great opportunity to get together.”
