Birregurra won the toss and elected to bat, with the Saints openers racing to 95 before Noah Riches made the first breakthrough in the 16th over.

"Our bowlers were inconsistent early on with our lines and lengths" Camperdown captain Steve Fisher said.

"It was a good, quick ground and their openers were pretty good bats who made us pay."

Riches and off-spinner Shane Wilson were the pick of the bowlers for the Lakers, slowing the scoring during the middle overs.

Riches took 2/46 from 10 overs, with Wilson taking 2/43 from 10.

"Noah and Wal (Wilson) bowled well, they took the pace off the ball, Birregurra struggled with them a bit.

"We had a patch of 15 overs where we took six wickets in 15 overs and got back on top."

The home team finished their innings strongly to record 8/271 from their 50 overs.

"Their last partnership gave us a few chances we didn't take.

"Take out our first eight poor overs and hold those catches at the end and it's a different game, we probably restrict them to around 200."

Camperdown got off to a strong start in the run chase via openers Jye McLaughlin and Harry Sumner.

"Jye hit them really cleanly, he and Harry run well together, they don't leave any runs out there."

McLaughlin top scored with an explosive 71 from 68 balls including 12 boundaries.

The Lakers challenged, with James O'Neil (34 from 56 balls), Dom Absalom (33 from 47) and Noah Riches (21 from 28) all making starts.

"We probably need one of those players to go on with it, they all looked good.

"We were in the game for the majority of it, we fell away late but we took a lot of positives out of the game."

The Lakers were dismissed in the 50th over for 219.

Tomorrow Camperdown returns to the SA Wright Oval to host Woorndoo, while the division three Lakers will start their 2025/26 against Cobden at Camperdown number two.
