Indigenous garden lease continues
THE Murnong Indigenous Garden will continue in community hands after Corangamite Shire councillors voted to approve a further three-year lease.
The garden, which is located at 30-32 William Street, Lismore, is leased to Murnong Indigenous Garden Incorporated (MIG) to operate the Indigenous community garden.
MIG also hosts a number of educational programs on the site, which was formerly the Lismore Croquet Club.
A meeting was held at the site with MIG representatives, councillors and council staff on May 12, discussing the proposal to continue developing the space.
With the lease due to expire on August 13, MIG requested a further three-year lease to continue the development of the site and seek funding for improvements.
Councillor Nick Cole moved the motion, saying he was pleased to see council support the garden for the next three years.
“This is something a little bit different – the Murnong Indigenous Garden is quite unique,” he said.
“It’s well worth dropping by and having a look at, and it’s quite extraordinary what they’ve got going on there with plants.
“It’s a great educational hub for the community to come in and have a look at and see something unique.”
Cr Laurie Hickey seconded the motion, saying it was a great use of an asset which had previously not been used to its full extent.
“The MIG members are doing a fantastic job up there, who I was introduced to a few years on a briefing day,” he said.
“I walked through it, and I’m very excited to see what’s going up there.
“I wish them all the very best.”
