THE inside lanes proved to tell the story at Terang’s latest race meeting held last Wednesday.
The ground one to two metres off the fence was the place to be across the day as all eight victors scored wins after being positioned near the rail.
The opening race, a 2150 metre maiden plate was won by Simon Morrish’s Scobie, a three year-old gelding ridden by apprentice Alana Kelly.
The pair sat on the rail towards the tail of the field and made their move within the final stages to secure a comfortable four length triumph over Heading North and Hanaki Warrior.
Race two, a three year-old fillies maiden over 1200 metres was won by Terry and Karina O’Sullivan’s Thermada.
After jumping from a wide barrier, jockey Declan Bates used the early speed to cross to the inside rail where the horse was never headed as it held on for a 1.5 length victory over Toff de Mac and Mrs Sippy.
The 1400 metre maiden plate which was race three on the card was taken out by Awesome Mover for trainer Brendan McCarthy.
Ridden by Daniel Stackhouse, Awesome Mover sat just behind the leaders before swooping late to score a half length win from Byalip and Feel The Beat.
Stackhouse made it a double in the following race, a 1200 metre maiden, riding Clever George from a wide barrier to the fence en route to its first victory.
The Vince Malady trained five year-old scored by a length from Wonaeamirri and Jousting after hitting the lead in the final stages.
Local horses Solitary Choice (John Barry) and Verando (David Drever) finished ninth and 12th in the event.
In race five, Dean Holland made it a training double for the O’Sullivans, guiding Quietly Angry to a 2.75 length win in a 1200 metre benchmark 58 event.
The four year-old defeated Tea Tales and La Tesora, and burst clear in the final 200 metres after camping just behind the leader for the majority of the race.
Sister Maree scored a narrow victory in the 1000 metre benchmark 58 race, holding off She’s Our Gift and Barry’s Cherax.
Jason Benbow was the winning jockey and it was the horse’s second win for trainers Russell and Scott Cameron.
In race seven, Malady also brought up his training double, with Cameo Lass scoring a narrow victory in a 1400 metre benchmark 58 handicap.
The mare was ridden by Joe Bowditch and held off Avoid the Rush and Bernie’s Regret in the latter stages.
Peg Leg Ben also ran in the race but finished 11th for John Barry.
And Rendalsham won the final event of the meeting, an 1850 benchmark 58 handicap, by half a length from A Quiet Drink and Sierra Moon.
The win was its second from its last three starts and it was ridden by John Allen for trainer Aaron Purcell.
The club was again busy the following day with 99 horses on track for jump-outs, with eleven trials held across 800 and 1000 metres
Terang will host its next meeting on March 22.
